In a washdown world, hygiene and uptime are decided by the hardware you mount at the line.
Food and beverage plants are among the harshest environments in industrial automation — not because of what the machines do, but because of what is done to them. Every shift ends with high-pressure washdowns, caustic detergents, hot steam and cold condensation. The touch panel PCs that operators depend on sit in the middle of it all.
A standard office-grade or lightly protected industrial PC will not last long there. Seals shrink, vents pull moisture into the enclosure, plastic coatings peel, and dirt settles into crevices that are impossible to clean. That is why more processors are specifying stainless steel touch panel PCs in SUS304 and SUS316 — not as a premium option, but as a core part of their food-safety and maintenance strategy.
The washdown zone is the real spec sheet
Before comparing processors and screens, look at the cleaning program. Lines are cleaned with high-pressure hot water at up to 80 bar (about 1,160 psi), sprayed from a distance measured in inches. Sanitising cycles add caustic agents at pH values above 12, and steam cleaning pushes water into every opening. Between washes, cold stores and fermentation rooms run at low temperatures with heavy condensation.
For an HMI, the result is a continuous attack on four fronts:
- Moisture ingress through seals, connectors and mounting gaps, driven by pressure and steam
- Chemical attack on coatings, gaskets and aluminium or plastic housings during every CIP cycle
- Thermal cycling between hot washdowns and cold storage, degrading seals and adhesives over time
- Internal condensation when warm, humid air meets a cold enclosure surface
This is why washdown-proof construction — a stainless housing, IP69K front sealing and a fully sealed rear — matters more than any single specification. It determines whether the panel survives the first cleaning cycle or the thousandth.
304 or 316? Start with the chemistry of your cleaning program
Both are food-industry workhorses, but they are not interchangeable.
SUS304 (18/8 stainless steel) handles water-based washdowns, mild acids and general food contact with excellent results. It is the standard choice for dairy, baking, beverage bottling and most processing areas where the cleaning chemistry stays within a moderate pH range.
SUS316 adds molybdenum, which dramatically improves resistance to chlorides and strong alkalis. Where cleaning relies on aggressive caustic CIP chemistry — breweries, sauce and brine lines, seafood and meat processing — 316 is the safer metallurgy, because it resists pitting and crevice corrosion far better over years of exposure.

If in doubt, map the panel location to the cleaning schedule: panels inside washdown zones or exposed to salt, brine or caustic chemicals should move up to 316. Panels in dry-to-moderate areas can stay with 304 — and the saved budget is better spent on brighter screens or better mounting.
Where stainless touch panel PCs earn their keep
In practice, four groups of applications dominate:
- Line-side HMI and recipe control — beverage filling, dairy lines and canning plants where operators start, stop and adjust production every shift.
- CIP/SIP and washdown zones — panels mounted inside the areas that are cleaned hardest, often right next to the equipment they control.
- Cold storage and high-moisture areas — meat, fresh produce and dairy rooms where condensation is constant and hands are wet or gloved.
- Wet-processing stations — breweries, sauce lines, seafood and brine areas where 316 is specified for its chemical resistance.
In all of these, the panel is not a dashboard on a wall. It is the operator’s primary tool for quality checks, batch records and line visibility — so it has to keep working the moment the washdown ends, with no condensation, no fogged screen and no failed touch input.
A practical selection checklist
When you specify a stainless touch panel PC, work through these six questions:
- Front sealing and IP rating — confirm the front is IP69K-rated for high-pressure hot-water washdown, and the rear is protected against steam and condensation.
- Mounting and hygienic design — flush or fully sealed mounts keep ledges and bacteria traps to a minimum. Rounded corners and no exposed screws are not cosmetics; they are cleanability.
- Screen brightness — in bright, sunlit or cold-store environments, 800–1,000 nits keeps the display readable at a glance.
- Touch that works with gloves — projected-capacitive or resistive touch that responds to wet, gloved fingers prevents daily frustration and data-entry errors.
- Connectivity — Ethernet, serial and fieldbus options let the panel talk to PLCs and SCADA without extra conversion boxes.
- Certifications and documentation — ask for EN 1672-2 compliance, FDA-compliant materials where relevant, and documentation your HACCP or FSSC 22000 auditor will accept.
Hygiene is a system, not a component
Food-safety auditors do not judge one component in isolation. They look at the whole line — the surfaces, the gaps, the cleanability, the documentation. A stainless steel touch panel PC in SUS304 or SUS316 closes one of the last weak points in the line: the human-machine interface that has to work through every washdown, every caustic cycle and every cold morning shift.
In food and beverage processing, downtime and recall risk cost more than hardware. Specifying the right stainless touch panel is a small decision with an outsized effect on uptime, compliance and the confidence of everyone who works the line.
